If your registration has expired and your car is just sitting in your driveway, alley, or apartment spot, you can still donate it in Greater Los Angeles. With AutoLift LA, what matters most is that you have a valid title in your name – not current stickers or paid-up tags. You do not need to renew the registration or pay back fees before donating. We arrange free towing, handle the paperwork on our side, and you still receive a tax receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in California: as long as you are the titled owner and there are no major title problems, AutoLift LA can accept your vehicle even if the registration is months or years past due. After pickup anywhere in Greater Los Angeles – from Koreatown, Van Nuys, and Boyle Heights to San Pedro, Pasadena, or the Valley – the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility. You should submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the California DMV so future tickets or fees don’t follow you. We’ll walk you through exactly what’s needed so you can get that non-running, expired-tag car out of your life and turn it into support for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have the title in your name
Find your California title (pink slip) and confirm your name matches the current owner. Expired tags are fine; unpaid registration fees do not stop donation. If you’re in apartments in Koreatown, a driveway in Inglewood, or a curb spot in Echo Park, you don’t need to move the car or renew anything first.
2. Call or submit our quick online donation form
Tell AutoLift LA your car’s basic info, mileage estimate, and that the registration is expired. We’ll confirm it’s eligible, explain the simple California process, and schedule a free tow anywhere in Greater Los Angeles, from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach and the South Bay, usually within a few days.
3. Schedule free towing from your exact location
You don’t have to drive the car or risk a ticket. Our licensed tow partner meets you where the vehicle sits—garages in Downtown LA, steep driveways in Highland Park, side streets in North Hollywood, or gated complexes in Westlake. They’ll load the car, even if it doesn’t start, at no cost to you.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if available)
At pickup, you sign the title over to the charity following our clear instructions. Keys are helpful but not always required. Once the driver takes the vehicle, it becomes the charity’s responsibility. No more worrying about tags, street-sweeping tickets, or HOA notes about that unused car.
5. File your DMV Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability
After the tow, you submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the California DMV—online or by mail. This step protects you from future tickets, fees, or toll issues tied to the vehicle. AutoLift LA provides the info you need so you can complete this in just a few minutes.
6. Receive your tax receipt for your donation
Once your vehicle is processed, Heritage for the Blind sends your tax-deduction receipt. Most donors receive at least a $500 tax receipt; if it qualifies for more, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C. Your once-problem car now helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired nationwide.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: In California, we generally need a valid title in the donor’s name. If the title is lost, you may need to request a duplicate from the DMV. If it’s still in a previous owner’s or relative’s name, we’ll explain what paperwork may be required to straighten it out before we can schedule pickup.
Registration holds from major fees or liens
Tip: Past-due registration usually isn’t a problem for donation, but DMV or lender liens can be. If there’s still a loan, or the DMV shows a serious legal hold, we may not be able to complete transfer until that’s cleared. Have any lender info handy when you contact AutoLift LA so we can quickly assess it.
Car stored in tight, underground, or HOA-restricted parking
Tip: Underground garages in Downtown, narrow Silver Lake driveways, or HOA rules can make towing trickier but not impossible. Let us know exactly where the car is and any gate or parking restrictions. We’ll coordinate with the tow company to use the right truck and timing so pickup goes smoothly.
Out-of-state title or non-California paperwork
Tip: If you recently moved to LA and your car still has an out-of-state title with expired tags, we can often still help. Share which state issued the title and whether the name matches your ID. We’ll tell you upfront what additional documents or signatures might be needed for a clean transfer.
